Life has been very routine lately and I haven't blogged much, but here is some recent productiveness. The Lovely S and I entertained Saturday and that involved making a red velvet cake. My grandmother used to make this cake every Christmas and it was always one of my favorites. The cake was delicious and it brought back wonderful memories. This recipe was from the Waldorf Astoria, via the NY Times, but it tasted just like I remember my grandmother's. I have her recipe too, so I may try to make her version next time. It makes a massive amount of cake, though: three layers. We opted for one layer and some freezable cupcakes.
Step one: making the unnaturally red batter.

Step two: the cake.

Step three: eat.

The alternating red and green maraschini pattern is an homage to my grandmother-- just the way she used to decorate.
One day, I will take some pictures of our guests and the party itself, not just the food!
