Several years ago, no doubt before Mickey Drexler got there, J Crew lost its way. It stopped selling the basic preppy stuff and started selling proto-metrosexual clothes. All tight stretchy pants for men in lots of black, grey, light grey, dark grey, and medium grey. For several years now they have been back on target with khakis, polos, rep ties, and tailored fit oxfords. Then today, this small little heavy-stock catalog comes in the mail. It is not of much interest to me, because it is the "dress book." But, uh, wow. S wouldn't wear these things if you paid her. I just hope this is not a harbinger of things to come. Please don't think you've sold us all the khakis you can and now you have to make things all crazy, cause Mickey, this is not normal.

Continuing with the bewildering retail theme, what is this ubiquitous "
Shop Bloom" campaign all about? I like the use of the
Partridge Family song. It DOES make me want to shop happy. But when was the last time you heard of a new grocery store? Its like starting a new auto manufacturer: it just isn't done. A quick google reveals Food Lion is behind this. So apparently it is FL's shot at an upscale market? Not really clear. If I want good stuff, I go to
Balducci's or
Whole Foods, top notch produce
Super H, regular groceries Safeway, or late-night groceries Shoppers. Where does Bloom fit in?
